WATCH OUT! (Part 11)
Luke 12:15 Then he said to them, “Watch out and guard yourself from all types of greed, because one’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Greed is one of those human emotions that are hard to tame. Jesus warned against all types of greed, meaning there are many types. And just like we’ve said before, anytime Jesus warns you against something, you better pay attention.
What is greed? It is defined as “intense and selfish desire for something, especially wealth or food”. Underline the word selfish, because that is the key. A greedy person will disregard everyone else and throw away every moral or human principle. And greed never says “enough”.
Look at our text. A man’s life does not consist of his possessions. But we get it all mixed up, thinking that getting more money and more gadgets means we have a “better” life. We will go to an extend of risking life to get more possessions, somehow forgetting that life is more precious than all the world.
What does wealth, fame and money mean to you? Are they tools to help you live, or are they life itself? Are you feeling overwhelmed by the desire to make more such that you forget the quality of life doesn’t depend on how much you have?
The things people crave for most do not cost money. Happiness, good friends, good health, peace of mind, a good sleep. Now try buying happiness. Hire friends to keep you company. Talk to a tycoon lying helpless in a hospital bed. Watch how some rich people are never at peace. Look at millionaires who are red eyed because they couldn’t sleep yesterday night.
Now look at a poor man who is happy, has lots of real friends, is at peace, has great health and is sleeping soundly on his thin mattress. That’s when you discover that material things alone are not the definition of life.
Watch out for ALL types of greed, life doesn’t consist of earthly possessions.
Prayer:- Heavenly Father, help us to tane our greed and keep our hearts sober. *Proverbs 15:27* _The one who is greedy for gain troubles his household, but whoever hates bribes will live._
